To
end high-risk drink specials,
sponsorships and other promotions that
appeal to youth or encourage binge
drinking.
BACKGROUND:
Alcohol
pricing and promotion schemes often contribute
to excessive and underage drinking. Drink
specials that feature large volumes of alcohol
for a small price encourage high-risk
consumption, especially among young people.
Additionally, the content and placement of
alcohol marketing is often designed to attract
youth and encourage them to drink, even though
they may not legally do so.
RECOMMENDED
ACTIONS:
Pass
a law banning alcohol ads in
certain public places,
particularly those close to
youth-frequented areas.
Restrict
the size, placement and
concentration of ads in the
windows of licensed alcohol
outlets.
Urge
media outlets and
alcohol-oriented business to
avoid youth-appealing content in
alcohol ads.
Ban
alcohol ads and sponsorships at
community-based organizations
and events.
Monitor
and enforce existing
restrictions on alcohol
promotions.
